Was oben stehen muss

A student resume leads with education, because it is the main credential you have: the school, the month and year you expect to graduate, and your GPA if it helps. Below it goes whatever shows you can do the work, such as part-time jobs, class projects, clubs, sports and volunteering, each written with the same result-first bullets a working adult would use. It fits on one page.

Warum dieses Beispiel funktioniert

  • School, year and GPA open the summary because they are the strongest credential a second-year student has. The expected graduation date sits in the education line, which is where an employer looks to see when you could work full time.
  • The part-time job is written like any professional role, with numbers: members checked in, hires trained, shifts no longer left open.
  • A class project and a treasurer role fill the space a longer career would fill, and each one has a result of its own.
  • High school is gone. Once you are in college the college is enough, unless you are still in your first semester.

Kurzprofile

Beispiele für das Kurzprofil für jede Situation: Student

Derselbe Lebenslauf beginnt anders, je nachdem, wo Sie starten. Ein Kurzprofil für jeden Fall, und womit es beginnt.

  • High school student, first job

High school junior (3.4 GPA) with two summers of paid babysitting for three families and 40 hours of volunteer work at the county animal shelter. Available after 3 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends for a part-time retail or restaurant job.

For a first job, availability is part of the pitch, so it goes in the summary. Babysitting, mowing lawns and helping in a family business all count as work.

  • College student, part-time or summer job

Third-year computer science student at the University of Michigan working at the campus IT help desk: close 25 to 30 tickets a week and wrote the desk's printer troubleshooting guide. Looking for a summer position in software or IT support.

Name the major and the year, then one job or project with a number in it. The last sentence says what kind of role you are after.

  • Student with no work experience

First-year biology student at Florida State University (3.8 GPA) and two-season captain of a varsity high school swim team, which meant 5 a.m. practices and organizing carpools for 14 teammates. Looking for a part-time lab assistant or tutoring position.

Without a job, school, sports, clubs and volunteering are the evidence. Pick the one that best shows you turn up and take responsibility, and give it a number.

Über die Erfahrung hinaus

What to list instead of work experience

Anyone hiring students knows most applicants have little or no job history, so they look for the next best evidence that you turn up, learn quickly and finish things. These sections supply it. Include the ones you can fill with something specific and skip the rest.

  • Education and GPA

School, expected graduation month and year, and your GPA if it is 3.0 or higher. Honors and relevant coursework get one line each. High school students list their high school; college students drop it after the first year.

  • Projects

Class projects, a website you built, a small business you ran over the summer. Give each one a title, what you did and what came of it, exactly as you would a job.

  • Clubs, sports and leadership

Captain, treasurer, organizer: a title shows that somebody trusted you with something. Say how many people or how much money it involved.

  • Volunteering

Name the organization, how often you went and what you did there. Volunteering you kept up for months reads as reliability, which is most of what a first employer is hiring for.

  • Certificates

First aid and CPR, a food handler card, lifeguard certification, Microsoft Office Specialist: anything with an issuer and a date. They take one line each and an employer can check them.

Vorlage

Welche Vorlage für den Lebenslauf: a student

Basic. A plain one-column layout that every applicant tracking system reads, and a student resume has no reason to be anything more: the content is short, and a plain page makes it look complete rather than sparse. Basic is also the one layout that downloads free without a watermark.

Fragen zum Lebenslauf: Student

What should I write in a resume as a student?

Education first (school, expected graduation date, and GPA if it is 3.0 or higher), then any jobs, then projects, activities and volunteering, each with one or two bullets on what you did and what came of it. Finish with a short skills line naming real tools, and keep the whole thing on one page.

What is the best format for a student resume?

Reverse chronological, one column, one page, with education at the top. A skills-based or functional resume tends to look as if it is hiding a gap, and a student has no gap to hide: a short history is what the reader expects.

How do I write a student resume with no work experience?

Replace the experience section with the next best evidence: projects, clubs, sports, volunteering and informal work such as babysitting or helping in a family business. Write each one as you would a job, with a title, dates and a result, and put your availability in the summary.

What should a 16-year-old's resume look like?

Short and specific: name, phone, email and city; a two-line summary with your grade and when you can work; your school and GPA; any informal work, volunteering or sports; and a few skills. Half a page is fine for a first job.
