What has to be at the top

A sales resume opens with your number: quota attainment as a percentage of a stated quota for a stated year, plus what you sell and to whom. Every job then gives its quota, territory or deal size before the bullets, and each bullet ends in revenue, attainment or rank, so a sales manager can compare you with the reps already on the team.

Why this example works

  • Attainment is given as a percentage and as the quota behind it, because 118% of $1.1M and 118% of $200K describe different jobs.
  • The rank against the team, 2nd of 14, tells a sales manager how the number compares, which a percentage on its own cannot.
  • Deal size, buyer and sales cycle share one bullet, so a reader can see at once whether the experience matches their own motion: mid-market deals, finance buyers, two-month cycles.
  • The SDR start sits in the second job's title, which keeps the prospecting numbers without giving them an entry of their own.

Summaries

Sales resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • Sales development representative or new graduate

Communications graduate (University of Georgia, 2026) with a year as an inbound SDR for a property management software company. Qualified 350 inbound leads and booked 18 demos a month against a target of 12, and wrote the objection-handling sheet the team still uses.

Before you carry a quota, activity and conversion stand in for revenue: calls, meetings booked, demos held, and how each compares with the target.

  • Account executive or territory rep

Territory sales representative with five years selling dental equipment to 260 private practices across eastern Tennessee. Grew territory revenue from $2.1M to $3.4M in three years and finished 2025 at 126% of plan, first of nine reps in the region.

In field and outside sales the territory is the job, so say what you sell, to whom, how many accounts, and how revenue moved while you had it.

  • Sales manager or director

Regional sales director leading 4 managers and 32 account executives across the Midwest, with $38M in annual bookings. Rebuilt the forecast cadence and deal reviews; over two years forecast accuracy rose from 71% to 93% and regional attainment from 82% to 104% of plan.

Leaders are judged on the team's number rather than their own deals: headcount, total quota, team attainment, and what you changed to move it.

Skills

Skills for a sales resume

Sales postings name the CRM and the sales motion (inbound or outbound, SMB or enterprise) far more than general skills, so match those words exactly. A claim such as "top performer" belongs in a bullet with the number that proves it, never in this list.

Hard skills

Selling

  • Prospecting and cold outreach
  • Discovery and qualification
  • Product demos
  • Negotiation
  • Closing

Pipeline and accounts

  • Pipeline management
  • Sales forecasting
  • Account management
  • Territory planning
  • Upselling and cross-selling

Tools

  • Salesforce
  • HubSpot CRM
  • LinkedIn Sales Navigator
  • Gong

Soft skills

  • Resilience
  • Active listening
  • Persuasion
  • Relationship building
  • Coachability
  • Self-motivation

Name two or three of these in the skills section at most. They count for more when a bullet shows one at work.

Bullet points

Sales resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Exceeded sales targets.

Closed $820K in new business in 2025 against a $700K quota (117%), finishing third of 22 reps on the inside sales team.

  • Generated new leads.

Built a 12-step outbound sequence for hospital procurement managers that booked 46 first meetings in a quarter, 30% of the team's new pipeline.

  • Managed key accounts.

Managed 35 enterprise accounts worth $5.6M a year and kept net revenue retention at 112% by running a quarterly business review with each buyer.

  • Responsible for upselling existing customers.

Sold the analytics add-on to 28 existing customers in six months, adding $410K in annual recurring revenue from accounts already on the books.

  • Trained new sales reps.

Onboarded seven new account executives with a 30-day call-shadowing plan; all seven closed a first deal within 60 days, against a team norm of 90.

Beyond experience

Sales licenses and certifications

Most sales jobs need no license, so this section usually holds proof that you know the tools and a named way of selling. Regulated products are the exception: selling securities, insurance or real estate takes a license, and the posting will say which one.

  • FINRA Series 7 and SIE

The Series 7 qualifies a general securities representative to sell securities products, and the SIE exam is a corequisite. You must be sponsored by a FINRA member firm to sit the Series 7, which is why some postings say the firm will sponsor it. List each exam you have passed and whether the registration is active.

    Issued by FINRA

  • State insurance or real estate license

Selling insurance or property takes a license from the state where you sell. Write the license type and the state, for example "Life and Health Producer License, Ohio", and add the number only if the application asks for it.

Issued by your state's insurance department or real estate commission

  • CRM and sales software certifications

HubSpot Academy offers sales certifications such as Inbound Sales and Sales Hub Software, and each has its own validity period, so write the month yours expires. A CRM certification helps most when the posting names that CRM.

    Issued by HubSpot Academy

  • Sales methodology training

MEDDIC, Challenger, SPIN or Sandler: if an employer trained you in a method and you use it, name it once in skills or in the bullet where it made a difference. A hiring manager who runs the same method reads that as a shorter ramp-up.

Template

Which template to use for a sales resume

Modern. A sales resume often reaches a sales manager directly, forwarded by a recruiter, a referral or a LinkedIn message, and that reader wants the numbers first. Modern gives the main column to the jobs and their results and moves contact details, tools and skills into a sidebar, which makes the page quick to scan. When you apply through a company's online form, switch to Basic or ATS Pro, since Modern's sidebar is read after the main column; Basic also downloads free without a watermark.

Sales resume questions

What should a sales resume include?

Contact details; a summary with your attainment and what you sell; your jobs newest first, each with its quota, territory or deal size and three to five bullets that end in revenue, attainment or rank; the CRM and sales tools you use; education; and any license the product requires.

What are the top skills for a sales resume?

Prospecting, discovery and closing are the three skills every sales posting assumes, but listing them proves nothing. Show them as numbers instead: meetings booked for prospecting, demo-to-deal conversion for discovery, and attainment for closing. In the skills section itself, name the CRM and tools the posting mentions.

How do I write a sales resume with no sales experience?

Lead with the jobs where you already persuaded people or hit a number: upselling in retail, check averages as a server, fundraising, recruiting members for a club. Give each a figure, such as a target or a sign-up count, and apply for SDR and inside sales roles, which are designed for people starting out.

Should a sales resume have an objective or a summary?

A summary. Two or three sentences that give your attainment, what you sell and to whom, such as "118% of a $1.1M quota selling software to mid-market finance teams", do everything an objective promises. Keep an objective for a first job only, and end it with the kind of sales role you want.

How do you show quota attainment on a resume?

As a percentage with the quota and the period behind it: "112% of a $900K annual quota, 2025". Add your rank on the team when it helps, and list several years in a row when the streak is the point. For a year you missed, describe what you did win, such as new logos or a large renewal, instead of the percentage.
