What has to be at the top

A bartender resume opens with the bars you have worked and how busy they were: cocktail, hotel or high-volume, and drinks or guests a night. Then come the numbers that show you look after the business as well as the guest, such as pour cost, sales per shift and inventory, with your state alcohol server certification where a manager sees it at once.

Why this example works

  • Volume comes first in the summary and in the first bullet, because drinks per night tells a bar manager more about speed than any adjective could.
  • Pour cost and inventory get numbers of their own. They separate a bartender a manager can leave in charge of the bar from one who only makes drinks.
  • The RBS line carries its expiry month, since California certifications last three years and a lapsed one keeps you off the schedule.
  • The hotel job keeps the barback start in its title: a promotion within eight months is a result in itself.

Summaries

Bartender resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • Barback moving up

Barback with 18 months at a busy sports bar, stocking two wells, changing kegs and cleaning draft lines on 300-guest game nights. Covers the service bar on weeknights and knows the core classics and the POS. TIPS On-Premise certified and ready for a first bartending job.

Barbacking is the usual route behind the bar, so give it bullets with numbers and name the drinks and systems you already handle.

  • Experienced bartender

Bartender with five years at a neighborhood restaurant bar and a brewery taproom, running a 20-seat bar alone on weeknights and averaging $1,900 in sales a shift. Certified Beer Server who keeps a 24-tap list clean and rotated. Built a weekday happy hour that doubled 4 to 6 p.m. sales in one quarter.

Sales per shift and one thing you built, such as a menu, a program or a happy hour, show you do more than pour.

  • Head bartender

Head bartender with 11 years in cocktail bars and hotel beverage programs, leading 8 bartenders and barbacks across two bars. Owns the cocktail menu, the ordering and a $40,000 monthly liquor budget, holding pour cost between 18% and 19% for two years. Holds the WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits.

Head bartenders are hired on cost control and the team they run, so the budget, the pour cost and the staff you trained belong in the summary.

Skills

Skills for a bartender resume

Beyond experience

Bartending licenses and certifications

Alcohol service training is the one credential a bar manager checks, and in some states it is the law: California requires certification within 60 days of starting work. Wine, spirits and beer qualifications are optional, but they mark the bartender who can build a menu rather than only follow one.

  • California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS)

Every on-premises alcohol server and manager in California must be certified within 60 days of the first day of work: training with an approved provider, then the ABC exam within 30 days of finishing it. The certification is valid for three years, so give the month it expires.

Issued by California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control

  • TIPS On-Premise

Where the state has no card of its own, a bar may ask for TIPS, which trains staff to prevent intoxication, underage drinking and drunk driving. Write the program name in full, because TIPS also runs off-premise, concessions and gaming versions.

    Issued by TIPS

  • WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits

Covers how spirits are made, how to taste them and the basics of cocktails, and ends in a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions. There are no entry requirements; plan on at least 26 hours of study, 14 of them with an approved course provider.

Issued by Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET)

  • Certified Beer Server

The first level of the Cicerone program: an online exam of 60 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, with 75% needed to pass. Worth the line for taprooms, beer bars and any bar that makes a point of its draft list.

    Issued by Cicerone Certification Program

Template

Which template to use for a bartender resume

ATS Pro. Bars in hotels and restaurant groups often take applications online, but the person who decides is a bar manager who likes to see some personality on the page. ATS Pro serves both, with one reading column that parses in order and a dark header and skill tags that look like more than a form. It holds this sample's two jobs and three certifications on one page. For a plain-text online form, use Basic, which downloads free without a watermark.

Bartender resume questions

How do you describe bartending on a resume?

By venue, volume and money: the type of bar, how many drinks or guests a night, and a figure such as sales per shift or pour cost. Then add what you built or ran beyond your own well, such as a cocktail menu, the inventory count or the training of new staff.

What skills should a bartender put on a resume?

Cocktail and spirits knowledge, speed at volume, cash handling and the POS you know, inventory and pour-cost control, and ID checks. Keep soft skills to a few, such as guest rapport and staying calm with intoxicated guests, and show the rest in bullets.

How do I write a bartender resume with no bartending experience?

Lead with the closest work, such as barback, server, barista or event staff, with numbers from those shifts. Complete your state's alcohol server training or TIPS before you apply and list it near the top. Barback openings are worth applying for as well, because they put you behind the bar while you learn.

What is a good summary for a bartender resume?

Two or three sentences: the kind of bars and your years, a volume figure, and one result such as a menu you wrote or a cost you brought down, ending with your alcohol certification. The three summaries above follow that order from barback to head bartender.

Should a bartender resume be different from a server resume?

Yes. A server resume sells guest service and check averages; a bartender resume adds drink knowledge, speed at volume and the back-of-bar work of inventory, ordering and pour cost. If you do both jobs, keep one version for each and send the one the posting asks for.
