What has to be at the top

A caregiver resume opens with the kind of care you give and who receives it: in-home or facility, seniors, people with dementia or disabilities, and the tasks from bathing to meals. Put your training, CPR and first aid, and a clean driving record near the top, because an agency looks for those before it matches you with a client. Then describe each job by clients and hours, with one change in a client's life that your care made.

Why this example works

  • The summary names the kind of care (in-home, seniors, dementia) and the three things a home care agency screens for: aide training, first aid and CPR, and a clean driving record.
  • Each job gives the number of clients and the hours a week, so the reader sees the caseload without having to guess it.
  • The results are changes in a client's day that a caregiver can honestly claim: calmer evenings, a warning sign reported in time, a recovery from walker to cane.
  • Work for a private family appears as a job with dates and bullets, not as a gap, because it is paid caregiving experience.

Summaries

Caregiver resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • New caregiver or family caregiver

Caregiver moving into paid work after two years of full-time care for a parent with Parkinson's disease, covering bathing, transfers, meals, medications and 60 medical appointments. Certified in adult first aid and CPR and enrolled in a home health aide course that ends in May. Available for weekday and overnight shifts.

Caring for a relative is real experience, so give it dates and duties like a job. Add the training you have started, which shows an agency you mean to stay in the work.

  • Assisted living or memory care caregiver

Resident caregiver with four years in a 60-bed assisted living community, the last two on its secure memory care wing. Helps 12 residents a shift with bathing, meals and activities, and trained 6 new caregivers on the wing's daily dementia routine.

In a facility the reader wants the setting and the number of residents per shift. Memory care, hospice or rehab experience belongs in the first sentence.

  • Live-in or lead private caregiver

Live-in private caregiver with 11 years of experience, the last six with one client with ALS from diagnosis through hospice. Schedules three relief caregivers, orders supplies, and keeps the daily care log that the family and the hospice nurses work from.

At this level the page shows trust and coordination: long placements, the relief staff you schedule, and the nurses and families who rely on your records.

Skills

Skills for a caregiver resume

Caregiver postings mix three kinds of work: personal care, help around the home and companionship. Name all three with the tasks you really do, and add the conditions you have cared for, such as dementia, Parkinson's or recovery after surgery, since agencies match caregivers to clients by them.

Hard skills

Personal care

  • Bathing and grooming
  • Dressing and toileting
  • Incontinence care
  • Help with eating

Health and safety

  • Safe transfers (gait belt, Hoyer lift)
  • Fall prevention
  • Medication reminders
  • Reporting changes in condition
  • Infection control

Home and daily life

  • Meal preparation and special diets
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Transportation to appointments
  • Companionship and activities

Conditions

  • Dementia and Alzheimer's care

Soft skills

  • Patience
  • Compassion
  • Reliability
  • Observation
  • Communication with families
  • Respect for privacy

Name two or three of these in the skills section at most. They count for more when a bullet shows one at work.

Bullet points

Caregiver resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Helped clients with daily living.

Gave bathing, dressing and toileting help to four clients a week in their homes, following each care plan, with no falls or skin injuries during care in three years.

  • Prepared meals.

Planned and cooked low-sodium meals for a client with heart failure and kept a daily weight log for the nurse; hospital readmissions went from three in the previous year to none.

  • Provided companionship.

Built a daily routine of walks, music and card games for a client with early dementia who had stopped leaving the house; within two months the client was going to the senior center twice a week.

  • Reminded clients to take medications.

Gave reminders at every dose from the pill organizer the nurse filled, for a client on 11 medications; the nurse's monthly count found no missed doses for six months.

  • Kept families informed.

Sent each client's family a short text after every visit on meals, mood and anything the nurse should know, and family survey scores for those clients stayed at 5 out of 5 for three years.

Beyond experience

Caregiver training and certifications

Caregiving has fewer mandatory credentials than nursing, and what is required depends on your state and on who pays for the care. Agencies still look for training, first aid and CPR before a first shift, so give whatever you hold a section of its own.

  • Home health aide training

Aides working for a Medicare-certified home health agency need a training and competency evaluation program, or a competency evaluation on its own. Classroom and supervised practical training must total at least 75 hours, with at least 16 hours of classroom work before at least 16 hours of supervised practice, and aides then receive at least 12 hours of in-service training every 12 months. Put your program and its hours on the education line.

Issued by Code of Federal Regulations, 42 CFR 484.80

  • Personal care aide requirements

For personal care under a Medicaid personal care benefit, the qualification standards are set by the state. Use your state's own title for any training or registration you hold, such as home care aide or personal care aide, with the date you completed it.

Issued by your state's health or human services department

  • First aid and CPR

Red Cross courses come online, blended or in a classroom. The blended course ends with a skills check by a certified instructor, while the online-only course gives a certificate of completion that may not satisfy an employer. The certification lasts two years; write the month it runs out.

Issued by American Red Cross, among other providers

  • Nursing assistant certification

A CNA certification opens nursing home and hospital jobs as well as home care. If you are working toward it, list the program and the month you expect to take the state exam under education.

  • Driving and screening

Many caregiver jobs mean driving clients to appointments and errands, so a valid driver's license, a clean record and an insured car are worth a line in the summary. Background checks and health screenings are the employer's to run; leave them off unless a posting asks whether you have cleared one.

Template

Which template to use for a caregiver resume

Modern. Many caregivers are hired by a family, or by the owner of a small agency, who reads the resume on paper or on a phone before meeting you in the client's home. Modern gives that reader the care history in the main column and puts contact details, care skills and languages in a sidebar that is quick to scan. For a large agency's online application, switch to Basic, which reads in strict order and downloads free without a watermark.

Caregiver resume questions

What is a good summary for a caregiver resume?

Two or three sentences with the kind of care and clients, your years, your training and one fact that shows reliability. For example: "Home caregiver with five years of senior care, trained as a home health aide, CPR certified, with no missed shifts in two years." Say which conditions you have cared for, since that is how agencies match caregivers to clients.

How do you describe caregiver duties on a resume?

Group them the way the work is done: personal care (bathing, dressing, toileting, transfers), health tasks (medication reminders, vital signs, reporting changes), and home and daily life (meals, housekeeping, errands, companionship). Then add a number to each job, such as clients, hours a week or years with one client, and one result.

What are the top qualities of a caregiver?

Patience, reliability and close observation come up most. A resume shows them through facts: years with the same client, visits never missed, a change in health you noticed and reported. Listing the words without evidence tells a family nothing they can check.

How do I write a caregiver resume with no experience?

Start with any care you have given unpaid, such as looking after a parent, grandparent or neighbor, and describe it like a job with dates and tasks. Add first aid and CPR, any aide course you have started, and jobs where you were trusted with people or a schedule, such as childcare, food service or retail.
