What has to be at the top

A registered nurse resume opens with the license: RN, the issuing state, and whether it is a multistate compact license, followed by your specialty and the kind of unit you work on. Basic life support and any specialty certification come right after it. Then each job is described by unit type, bed count and patient ratio, with one outcome per role, so that a manager looking for a med-surg nurse with telemetry sees those words in the first lines.

Why this example works

  • The license line says what a recruiter checks first: the credential and the state that issued it. The license number stays off, because an employer verifies it in Nursys anyway.
  • Each unit is described by bed count, patient mix and ratio, which tells a nurse manager more in one line than a list of duties does in five.
  • Life support certifications carry the month they expire, so nobody has to ask whether BLS is current.
  • The patient care technician job from nursing school is gone. After five years as an RN it no longer earns its line; a new graduate should keep it.

Summaries

Registered Nurse resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • New graduate nurse

New graduate nurse (BSN, 2026) who has passed the NCLEX-RN and holds a Texas RN license. Completed a 180-hour capstone preceptorship on a cardiac step-down unit, carrying up to three patients by the final week, on top of 400 hours as a patient care technician. BLS and ACLS current.

Without a nursing job yet, clinical hours are the experience. Say which unit, how many hours, and how many patients you carried by the end.

  • Staff nurse

Emergency department nurse with four years in a 50-bed Level II trauma center, Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) on a multistate compact license. Day-shift triage lead and member of the sepsis committee that brought door-to-antibiotic time under one hour for 88% of sepsis patients.

The specialty and its certification take the first line. One number should show that you move the whole unit, not only your own patients.

  • Charge nurse or nurse manager

Charge nurse and assistant nurse manager with 12 years in critical care, CCRN (Adult), leading a 24-bed medical ICU with a staff of 60. Rebuilt the unit's self-scheduling, which cut agency hours by 30% in a year while the vacancy rate fell from 14% to 5%. Ready for a nurse manager role.

Staffing, retention and budget are the results that count at this level, and they belong in the summary rather than halfway down the page.

Skills

Skills for a registered nurse resume

Hospital postings name the unit and the systems outright: telemetry, med-surg, Epic. Put your specialty in the skills and in the title of every job, and keep certifications in their own section with their expiry dates.

Bullet points

Registered Nurse resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Responsible for patient care on a busy orthopedic unit.

Cared for 4 to 5 patients per shift on a 30-bed orthopedic unit, most within a day of joint replacement; 92% of assigned patients walked on the day of surgery against a unit goal of 85%.

  • Educated patients about their medications.

Rewrote the heart failure discharge teaching as a one-page teach-back sheet in English and Spanish; 30-day readmissions for heart failure patients on the unit fell from 21% to 15%.

  • Participated in the hospital's CAUTI reduction initiative.

Audited catheter need every day as the unit's CAUTI champion and removed catheters under the nurse-driven protocol; the unit went 14 months without a catheter-associated urinary tract infection.

  • Trained new nurses.

Precepted nine new graduates over three years, and eight of them were still on the unit a year later.

  • Worked in the ICU with critically ill patients.

Managed 1:2 assignments in a 20-bed surgical ICU, including patients on ventilators, vasopressors and CRRT, and answered rapid response calls as the team's ICU nurse.

Beyond experience

Nursing licenses and certifications

A nursing resume is checked against its license before anything else on it is read. Give the license its own section with the state and whether it is multistate, then life support, then specialty certifications, each with the month it expires.

  • RN license and the NCLEX-RN

Your state board of nursing issues the license once you pass the NCLEX-RN. Write it as "Registered Nurse, Texas". The exam needs no line of its own once the license exists; a new graduate still waiting can write "NCLEX-RN scheduled for July 2026".

Issued by National Council of State Boards of Nursing

  • Multistate license

Under the Nurse Licensure Compact, a nurse whose home state is a member can hold one multistate license and practice in the other compact states without further licenses, in person or by telehealth. Say so when you hold one: travel, telehealth and border-area employers look for it.

    Issued by Nurse Licensure Compact

  • The license number

Leave it off unless the application asks for it. An employer can look up and verify your license in Nursys, the national licensure database, so the number tells the reader nothing and puts one more private detail on the page.

    Issued by NCSBN (Nursys)

  • BLS, ACLS and PALS

Basic life support belongs on every clinical resume, with ACLS or PALS wherever the unit uses them: critical care, emergency, pediatrics. Red Cross certification lasts two years, and its online-only certificate may not meet workplace requirements, so check which course the posting accepts.

Issued by American Red Cross, among other providers

  • Specialty certification

CCRN for critical care, CEN for emergency nursing, MEDSURG-BC for medical-surgical nursing. These come after time in the specialty: one route to CCRN (Adult) asks for 1,750 hours of direct care of acutely or critically ill adults in the previous two years. Repeat the one you hold in your summary.

Issued by AACN Certification Corporation (CCRN)

Template

Which template to use for a registered nurse resume

Basic. One plain column with standard headings, so a hospital's applicant system reads every line in the right order. It also fits the most on a page: a nursing resume carries a whole section of licenses and certifications, and this layout keeps them on page one next to five years of clinical work, where the designed layouts push them onto a second page. It is free to download without our watermark.

Registered Nurse resume questions

What does a good RN resume look like?

It starts with the license and specialty, lists certifications with their expiry dates in a section of their own, and describes each job by unit type, bed count and patient ratio before the bullets. Every bullet ends in a result: fewer falls, faster discharges, a new nurse who stayed. One page is enough for most staff nurses; two suit a long critical-care or leadership career.

What should you not include in a nurse resume?

Your license number, anything that could identify a patient, a photo, and every task from your job description. Drop certifications that have lapsed unless you are renewing them, and drop clinical rotations once you have a year of paid nursing work.

How do I write a new grad nursing resume?

Put your degree and your license, or your NCLEX date, at the top. Then list clinical rotations and the capstone preceptorship as experience, giving the unit, the hours and how many patients you carried by the end. Patient care technician, CNA or scribe work goes below that, because it is paid clinical time.

What is a good summary for a nursing resume?

Three sentences: your license and specialty, your years and the type of unit, and one result that belongs to you, such as a quality project or a precepting record. The three summaries above show the same shape for a new graduate, a staff nurse and a charge nurse.

What skills should a registered nurse put on a resume?

The clinical skills your kind of unit calls for, in the words postings use (telemetry, IV therapy, wound care, post-operative care), the charting system you know, such as Epic or Cerner, and two or three soft skills at most. Certifications go in their own section, not among the skills.
