What has to be at the top

A data analyst resume should lead with the tools you query and report with (SQL first, then Python or R, then a BI tool such as Tableau or Power BI) and the business area whose data you know. Each bullet then names the question someone asked, the analysis, and the decision or number that changed because of it, since a dashboard on its own proves only that you can build one.

Why this example works

  • SQL, Python and Tableau appear in the summary and again in the bullets where they were used, so both a recruiter's keyword search and an analytics manager's skim find them.
  • Each bullet ends in a business outcome rather than an output: ad spend cut, hours saved, money recovered. The model or dashboard is the method, not the result.
  • Scale is stated once where it means something, a 40-million-row claims table and a warehouse 60 analysts use, instead of being repeated on every line.
  • The Power BI certification covers the second BI tool. The work history shows Tableau, and postings often name Power BI instead, so the certificate answers that question before it is asked.

Summaries

Data Analyst resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • Entry-level analyst or career changer

Economics graduate (BA, University of Wisconsin, 2026) with the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate and three SQL and Python portfolio projects, including an analysis of 2 million bike-share trips that found which stations run out of bikes each morning. Excel and Tableau from a campus research assistant job.

Projects carry the experience section: for each one, the data set, the tools and the finding, stated as a number.

  • Data analyst

Data analyst with three years in healthcare operations, writing SQL against scheduling data and building Power BI dashboards for 14 clinic managers. Traced 22% of no-shows to a single reminder template, and the fix freed about 300 appointment slots a month.

Name the domain as well as the tools. A hiring manager in healthcare or finance wants someone who already knows how their data behaves.

  • Senior analyst or analytics lead

Senior data analyst with eight years in subscription businesses, leading a four-person analytics team and owning the company's churn and pricing metrics. Built the churn model behind a retention program credited with $1.8M in saved annual revenue, and set up the dbt metric definitions finance and product both report from.

The reader now looks for decisions your work drove, the people you lead, and the metrics you are the owner of.

Skills

Skills for a data analyst resume

Put SQL first, with the database or warehouse you used it on, then the BI tool and the language the posting asks for. Statistics methods are better shown in a bullet, such as a test you designed and what it decided, than listed one by one.

Querying and programming

  • SQL
  • Python (pandas, NumPy)
  • R

Visualization and BI

  • Tableau
  • Power BI
  • Looker
  • Excel (pivot tables, Power Query)

Soft skills

  • Explaining findings to non-technical teams

Bullet points

Data Analyst resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Created dashboards for the sales team.

Built an hourly-refreshed Tableau pipeline dashboard from Salesforce data for 35 sales reps; managers dropped the Monday spreadsheet meeting and forecast accuracy rose from 71% to 86%.

  • Analyzed customer data.

Segmented 250,000 customers by purchase frequency in SQL and Python; the win-back email to the lapsed-buyer segment brought in $410,000 in its first quarter.

  • Wrote SQL queries.

Rewrote the 20 slowest reporting queries in Snowflake as incremental models, cutting the nightly refresh from 3 hours to 25 minutes and compute costs by $2,300 a month.

  • Ran A/B tests.

Designed and analyzed 14 pricing-page experiments with the product team, including sample-size calculations; the two winners that shipped raised trial sign-ups by 9%.

  • Cleaned data.

Wrote validation checks for 18 source tables feeding the finance reports, which caught a currency-conversion error that had overstated EMEA revenue by $1.1M.

Beyond experience

Data analyst certifications

No license is needed to work as a data analyst. A certification helps most at entry level and when a posting names a specific tool; after a few years in the job, your projects and results do that work.

  • Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate

A nine-course program designed by Google and taken on Coursera, with no degree or experience required. It covers spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau and Python and ends with a case study you can show employers; Coursera puts it at six months at ten hours a week. Keep it on the page until you have a year or two as an analyst.

    Issued by Google, on Coursera

  • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300)

Earned by passing exam PL-300, which covers preparing, modeling and visualizing data and managing and securing Power BI, including Power Query and DAX. It must be renewed every 12 months through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so list it only while it is current.

    Issued by Microsoft

  • Salesforce Certified Tableau Data Analyst

Tableau's analyst certification, now issued under the Salesforce name. Use that exact title when a posting asks for Tableau, and check the current exam details on Trailhead before you book.

    Issued by Salesforce (Tableau)

  • Portfolio projects

A certificate shows you finished a course; a portfolio shows how you work. Two or three analyses, each with the question, the data, the SQL or notebook and the finding, give an interviewer something concrete to ask about.

Template

Which template to use for a data analyst resume

ATS Pro. Data analyst applications go through online forms, but the person who reads them afterwards spends the day in visual reports. ATS Pro keeps every word in one reading column for the applicant system and adds skill tags that put SQL, Python and Tableau where they are seen at once. If the form asks for plain text, or you want the one layout that downloads free without a watermark, use Basic.

Data Analyst resume questions

What should I include in my resume as a data analyst?

A summary with your tools and domain, a skills section grouped into querying, BI and analysis, jobs whose bullets end in a business result, education, and certifications if they cover a tool the posting names. New analysts add a projects section with two or three analyses and a link to the code.

What are the top 3 skills for a data analyst?

SQL, a BI tool such as Tableau or Power BI, and the ability to turn a loose business question into an analysis and explain the answer. Python or R comes next for most roles. On a resume the third skill shows up in bullets that end with a decision someone made.

How do I write an entry-level data analyst resume?

Put projects where the experience section would be, each with the data set, the tools and the finding. Add a certificate if you have one, any job where you worked with numbers such as inventory, scheduling or research, and your degree. The entry-level summary above shows how to open.

Should I put a GitHub link on a data analyst resume?

Yes, if it holds analyses a hiring manager can follow: a README with the question and the answer, readable SQL or notebooks, and charts. A profile full of course exercises does not help, so pin two or three projects of your own and link to those.

Applying to several jobs? A CV builder, a job-match checker and a personal website cost about $90 a month together on their cheapest plans. The Job Search Pack does all of it for $29, paid once, for 30 days: clean PDFs, cover letters, the full ATS check and your own CV website. That is $1.45 per application if you send 20.
