What has to be at the top

A software engineer resume should put your stack and the scale of your work at the top: the languages and frameworks you ship in, the kind of systems you build, and one number that sizes them, such as users, requests or transactions. Each bullet then says what you built, with what, and what changed for users or the business, in the same terms the posting uses.

Why this example works

  • The summary names the languages, the cloud and the scale (3 million transactions a day) in its first sentence, so an engineering manager can match it against the team's stack in one read.
  • Every bullet pairs what was built with a measured effect: latency in milliseconds, tickets a week, dollars a month. These are figures an engineer can pull from a dashboard or a bill, which makes them easy to defend in an interview.
  • The skills line is eight technologies from the actual work, not every language ever touched. A list of 30 makes it harder to tell what the engineer really ships in.
  • There is no certifications section. Six years of production work carry the proof, and a cloud certificate would add little next to them.

Summaries

Software Engineer resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • Junior engineer or new graduate

Computer science graduate (BS, Georgia Tech, 2026) with a 12-week software engineering internship on a logistics company's routing team, where a caching change went to production and cut a slow API call from 1.2 seconds to 300 ms. Builds in TypeScript, React and Node.js, with a side project that has 200 weekly users.

Internships, projects and open-source work stand in for jobs. Give each one the stack and a result, and link the code only if it is worth reading.

  • Mid-level engineer

Full-stack engineer with four years in TypeScript, React and Node.js at a B2B SaaS company, owning the billing and invoicing features used by 9,000 business accounts. Rebuilt invoice generation as a queued job, which ended month-end timeouts and cut billing support tickets by a third.

Ownership is what changes here: name the feature or service you are responsible for, and how many people or systems depend on it.

  • Senior or staff engineer

Senior software engineer with ten years in distributed systems, now technical lead of a seven-person platform team at a streaming company with 20 million monthly users. Designed the multi-region failover that took availability from 99.9% to 99.99%, and wrote the design review process 40 engineers now follow.

System design scope and influence beyond your own code carry the senior summary: the architecture you owned, the teams that adopted your work, the engineers you helped grow.

Skills

Skills for a software engineer resume

Group the stack the way the posting does (languages, frameworks, cloud) and list only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. Match the posting's spelling exactly, such as "Node.js" or "PostgreSQL", because that string is what an applicant tracking system looks for.

Hard skills

Languages

  • Python
  • Go
  • TypeScript
  • Java

Frameworks and databases

  • React
  • Node.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis

Cloud and infrastructure

Name two or three of these in the skills section at most. They count for more when a bullet shows one at work.

Bullet points

Software Engineer resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Worked on the backend API.

Built and own the orders API in Java and Spring Boot, serving 1,500 requests a second at peak, and brought p99 latency under 200 ms by adding read replicas.

  • Wrote unit tests.

Raised test coverage on the checkout service from 38% to 81% and made the tests a merge requirement; production incidents traced to that service fell from nine a quarter to two.

  • Improved website performance.

Split the React bundle by route and lazy-loaded the dashboard charts, cutting initial page load from 4.1 seconds to 1.6 on mid-range phones.

  • Fixed production issues.

Took primary on-call for a 12-service platform and wrote runbooks for the five most frequent alerts, which brought average time to resolve down from 70 minutes to 25.

  • Helped migrate to the cloud.

Moved 14 services from on-premises servers to AWS ECS with Terraform over two quarters, with no customer-facing downtime, and cut hosting costs by 30%.

Beyond experience

What counts instead of certifications in software engineering

Software engineering has no license, and few engineering postings require a certification. What interviewers look for instead is evidence of the work: code they can read, systems you designed, and the scale you ran them at. A cloud certification helps in a narrower set of cases, covered last.

  • Projects

For new graduates and career changers, projects are the experience section. Give each one a name, the stack and a result a stranger can check, such as users, a live link or a benchmark. Two finished projects say more than six tutorial apps.

  • GitHub and open source

Add the link only if your pinned repositories are ones you would happily walk an interviewer through. Merged pull requests to a known open-source project mean your code passed review by strangers, so name the project and what the change did.

  • System design scope

From mid-level on, the question is how large a system you have owned. Put it in the bullets: services, traffic, data volume, the teams depending on it, and the design decision that was yours.

  • AWS Certified Developer - Associate

One of the few vendor certifications worth a line, mainly for cloud-heavy or consulting roles, or when you move into backend work without production AWS experience. AWS describes it as covering developing, packaging and deploying applications, CI/CD workflows and resolving application issues, and it is valid for three years, so give the year you earned it.

Template

Which template to use for a software engineer resume

Basic. Engineering roles are usually applied for through an online form and an applicant tracking system before an engineer sees the resume. Basic keeps the stack, the jobs and the results in one plain column in the order they were written, and it holds six years of dense bullets on a single page. It is also the one layout that downloads free without a watermark.

Software Engineer resume questions

What should a software engineer resume include?

Contact details, with a GitHub or portfolio link if it is worth opening; a two- or three-sentence summary with your stack and level; a grouped skills section; experience with result bullets; projects if your experience is short; and education. Certifications are optional and go last.

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page until you have around ten years of experience, and two at most after that. Older jobs can shrink to a title, dates and one line, since the reader is mainly judging your recent work.

Should I put projects on my software engineer resume?

Yes if you have under two years of professional experience, or if a project shows something your jobs do not, such as a language you want to move into. Give each project the stack and a result. Once your jobs show the same skills, the projects can come off.

How do I write a senior software engineer resume?

Lead with scope: the systems you designed or own, the traffic or data behind them, and the teams that depend on them. Bullets should show decisions, such as an architecture, a migration or a process, with their effect, plus the engineers you mentored. The senior summary above is one example.

What skills should I list on a software engineer resume?

The languages, frameworks, databases and cloud tools you have used in production, grouped as the posting groups them, plus practices such as system design, testing and CI/CD. Leave out anything you could not answer interview questions on, and show soft skills through bullets about reviews and mentoring rather than in the list.
