What has to be at the top

A human resources resume starts with scale and specialty: how many employees you support, across how many sites, and which part of HR you own, such as employee relations, recruiting or benefits. SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP or PHR goes next to your title, and every bullet ends in a people metric the business tracks, such as turnover, time to fill or audit results.

Why this example works

  • SHRM-CP sits in the headline and the first sentence, so a recruiter screening for it finds it in the first line instead of at the bottom of the page.
  • Headcount and number of sites come first. They show a reader straight away if you have been the whole HR department for a site or one specialist in a large team.
  • Turnover, enrollment and audit results are written as before-and-after numbers, the language an operations leader already uses.
  • Investigations are counted, never described. Nothing on the page could identify an employee, and a hiring manager in HR checks for exactly that.

Summaries

Human Resources resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • HR assistant or coordinator

aPHR-certified HR assistant with a year at a 200-person logistics company and a bachelor's degree in psychology. Processes onboarding paperwork and I-9s for 10 to 15 new hires a month and answers the HR inbox, replying within one business day to 95% of requests.

At entry level, accuracy and volume are the evidence: how many new hires, files or requests you handled, and how cleanly.

  • HR specialist or business partner

Talent acquisition specialist with five years recruiting engineering and IT staff for a 3,000-person utility. Fills 60 to 70 salaried positions a year with an average time to fill of 38 days, down from 55, and runs the campus program that hired 22 interns in 2025.

Specialists lead with their function and its metric: time to fill for recruiting, cost per employee for benefits, cycle time for compensation reviews.

  • HR manager or director

HR director with 14 years in retail and distribution, SHRM-SCP certified, leading a team of nine for 2,400 employees in 40 locations. Designed the pay bands and store manager career path that cut store manager turnover from 32% to 14% in two years.

Directors are hired for business results that run through people: retention, labor cost, the leadership bench, and the programs that moved them.

Skills

Skills for a human resources resume

HR postings group skills by function (employee relations, recruiting, benefits, compensation) and by system (Workday, UKG, ADP). Lead with the function the job is for, and name your HRIS by its product name, since an employer on that system will search for it.

Talent and total rewards

Bullet points

Human Resources resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Handled recruiting for the company.

Recruited for 45 hourly and salaried roles a year at a 400-person food manufacturer, cutting average time to fill from 52 to 31 days with a same-week interview process.

  • Responsible for employee relations issues.

Investigated and resolved 35 employee complaints a year, documenting each against company policy; none became an outside agency charge in three years.

  • Administered benefits.

Moved 480 employees to a new health plan carrier at open enrollment, answering questions in 14 sessions across three shifts; the change saved the company $260K a year.

  • Created HR policies.

Rewrote the employee handbook for a company expanding into four new states, adding each state's leave rules; outside counsel approved it with two edits.

  • Worked on employee engagement.

Beyond experience

HR certifications

HR has no license, so certifications from SHRM and HRCI do the job one would. List the one you hold with its full name and the year, and once you have it, add the letters to your headline as well.

  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP)

For people doing HR or HR-related work at the operational level, such as implementing policy and acting as the day-to-day HR contact, and for those pursuing a career in HR. It is the usual first SHRM credential for generalists, coordinators and specialists.

    Issued by SHRM

  • SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP)

For people with at least three years of strategic-level HR work, such as creating HR strategy or developing policy, or SHRM-CP holders of three years moving into that kind of role. List it on manager and director resumes, where it replaces the SHRM-CP line.

    Issued by SHRM

  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR)

HRCI requires one year in a professional-level HR role with a master's degree, two years with a bachelor's, or four years without a degree. It is valid for three years and kept with 60 HR recertification credits over that time or by retaking the exam.

Issued by HR Certification Institute (HRCI)

  • Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR)

A knowledge-based credential that needs no HR experience, which makes it the one to earn before a first HR job or while moving into HR from another field. It is valid for three years and renewed with 45 recertification credits or by retaking the exam.

Issued by HR Certification Institute (HRCI)

Template

Which template to use for a human resources resume

Basic. HR people run the applicant tracking system themselves and know how it reads a resume, so a plain layout that parses cleanly is the safer choice for an HR job than a designed one. Basic keeps one column with standard headings, and it fits the most on a page, which leaves room for a certification line and two jobs with results. It is also the template that downloads free without a watermark.

Human Resources resume questions

How do I write a good resume for an HR role?

Open with the number of employees and sites you support and the part of HR you own, then your certification. Give each job three to five bullets that end in a people metric (turnover, time to fill, enrollment, audit findings), list the HRIS you use by name, and keep anything confidential about employees off the page.

What is a good summary for an HR resume?

Three sentences: your role and years, the population you support (headcount, sites, industry), and one result with a before and after number. Add SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP or PHR in the first sentence if you hold it. The summaries above show the shape for an HR assistant, a recruiter and an HR director.

What HR skills should I include on my resume?

The functions the job covers, in the posting's words (employee relations, recruiting, benefits administration, compensation, FMLA and ADA), plus the systems you have used, such as Workday, UKG or ADP. Two or three soft skills are enough; discretion and judgment show best in how you describe investigations and policy work.

How do I write an HR resume with no HR experience?

Pull out the HR work already inside your current job: interviewing candidates as a store manager, scheduling and onboarding as a shift lead, handling payroll in an office role. Title the section by your real job, put those tasks first with numbers, and add the aPHR, which needs no HR experience.

Applying to several jobs? A CV builder, a job-match checker and a personal website cost about $90 a month together on their cheapest plans. The Job Search Pack does all of it for $29, paid once, for 30 days: clean PDFs, cover letters, the full ATS check and your own CV website. That is $1.45 per application if you send 20.
