What has to be at the top

A teacher resume has to show three things before anything else: the credential you hold with the grades and subjects it covers, where and what you have taught, and one result from your own classroom. Put the credential in the first line of the summary, since a public-school posting starts from it, and let the bullets carry student growth rather than a list of duties.

Why this example works

  • The credential is named in the first sentence with its exact title, so nobody has to go looking for it.
  • Class size and who is in the room (English learners, students with IEPs) come first, because they give every result below its scale.
  • Each result names a measure the school already uses, such as running records or a unit test average, instead of saying the students improved.
  • Student teaching has dropped off. With two full teaching jobs to show, it no longer earns its line.

Summaries

Teacher resume summary examples by experience level

The summary is the part of a resume that changes most as a career goes on. The same job at three stages, and what each stage leads with.

  • New teacher, student teaching only

Newly credentialed elementary teacher (California Multiple Subject, 2026) with a 16-week student-teaching placement in a second-grade class of 24. Planned and taught a four-week measurement unit that moved the class average on the unit test from 54% to 77%. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Lead with the credential and the placement. The placement is your job history, so give it bullets like a job.

  • Experienced classroom teacher

Middle school math teacher with six years in grades 6 to 8, certified in Texas for Mathematics 4–8. Moved classes to daily exit tickets and reteach groups, and the pass rate on the state math test rose from 64% to 78% in two years. Sponsor of the school's MATHCOUNTS team.

Results lead from here on. Name the test or measure, the grade, and how much it changed.

  • Department chair or instructional coach

High school English teacher and department chair with 14 years in grades 9 to 12, National Board Certified in English Language Arts/Adolescence and Young Adulthood. Led a nine-teacher department through a new writing curriculum; juniors scoring proficient on the district writing assessment went from 41% to 63% in three years. Mentor to five first-year teachers.

At this level the reader wants proof that you raise other teachers' results too: a department, a grade team, the teachers you mentor.

Skills

Skills for a teacher resume

Copy the posting's own wording where it is true of you: a district that writes PBIS and MTSS is searching its applicant system for those letters. The credential belongs in its own section, not in this list.

Bullet points

Teacher resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Taught math to 7th grade students.

Taught four sections of seventh-grade math (112 students) and added a weekly reteach block for anyone under 70% on exit tickets; the share passing the end-of-year state test rose from 61% to 74%.

  • Managed classroom behavior.

Set up a class economy and restorative circles in a third-grade room with frequent disruptions; office referrals fell from 22 in the fall semester to 7 in the spring.

  • Communicated with parents regularly.

Replaced the monthly paper newsletter with a Friday text update in English and Vietnamese, and conference attendance rose from 55% to 90% of families.

  • Helped students with special needs in science class.

Adapted every science lab for five students with IEPs by adding visual step cards and a rotating lab partner; all five met their science goals for the year.

  • Worked on curriculum with other teachers.

Co-wrote the district's eighth-grade argumentative writing unit with three colleagues; it is now taught in all six of the district's middle schools.

Beyond experience

Teaching licenses and certifications

Public schools hire against a state credential, so the credential needs its own section with its exact name, the grades and subjects it covers, and the state. Each state sets its own requirements, and some ask for the Praxis tests along the way.

  • State teaching license or credential

The one line a public-school application cannot do without. Write it exactly as the state prints it, with the grade span and subject, such as "Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, California" or "Mathematics 4–8, Texas", and add "expected June 2026" while it is pending.

Issued by your state's education department or teacher licensing board

  • Praxis tests

Worth a line while the license is still in progress, to show the tests are behind you. Once the license is issued it says everything the scores did, so the scores can go.

    Issued by ETS

  • National Board Certification

The advanced credential for experienced teachers, awarded in a named certificate area and renewed every five years. List the area and the year, and repeat it in the summary: it is the strongest single line a senior teacher can have.

Issued by National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

  • Endorsements and authorizations

Add-ons such as an English learner, reading specialist or special education authorization. Put each one under the license it belongs to, because postings for bilingual and intervention roles search for them by name.

Issued by your state's education department

  • CPR and first aid

Asked for in early childhood, physical education and coaching posts. Give the month it expires. A certificate from an online-only course may not meet an employer's requirements, so check before you rely on one.

Issued by American Red Cross, among other providers

Template

Which template to use for a teacher resume

ATS Pro. A teacher application goes through the district's online system first and reaches a principal after that. ATS Pro keeps every word in one reading column for the system, and its dark header and skill tags give the principal a page that looks finished. It also keeps the credential on page one next to seven years of teaching, which the roomier Classic layout does not. If the form asks you to paste the resume in as plain text, use Basic, the layout that downloads free without a watermark.

Teacher resume questions

What should I include on my teacher resume?

Your name and contact details, a two- or three-sentence summary that names your credential, a licenses and certifications section, your teaching jobs newest first with three to five result bullets each, education, and a short skills list. Student teaching counts as experience until you have a year or two in your own classroom.

Should a teacher resume have an objective or a summary?

A summary, in almost every case. An objective says what you want; a summary says what you bring, which is what a principal is deciding on. A first-year teacher can end the summary with one line about the grade or subject they are aiming for, and that covers everything an objective used to do.

How long should a teacher resume be?

One page for most classroom teachers. Two pages are fine once you have ten or more years, a leadership role or National Board Certification to show. Lesson plans, a teaching philosophy and letters of recommendation belong in the application or a portfolio, not on the resume.

How do I write a teacher resume with no teaching experience?

Treat student teaching as your first job: school, grade, number of students, dates, and bullets with what you planned and what changed. Add substitute teaching, tutoring, camp and after-school work below it, and put the credential right under your name, marked as expected if it has not been issued yet.

Should I put a photo on a teacher resume?

Not for a school in the US. A photo takes space from your experience and invites exactly the kind of judgment a fair hiring process tries to keep out, which is why this example leaves it off.

Applying to several jobs? A CV builder, a job-match checker and a personal website cost about $90 a month together on their cheapest plans. The Job Search Pack does all of it for $29, paid once, for 30 days: clean PDFs, cover letters, the full ATS check and your own CV website. That is $1.45 per application if you send 20.
