What has to be at the top

An internship resume puts your school, major, expected graduation date and GPA in the top lines, together with the weeks you can work, because a recruiter filling a summer program checks fit and availability before anything else. Directly below goes the closest thing you have to the work itself: a research job, a class project with real data, an earlier internship, each with one number. Relevant coursework takes a single line and everything else stays short.

Why this example works

  • The summary ends with the exact dates the student can work. Summer programs start and end on fixed days, and a recruiter who has to guess whether you are free in June will usually move to the next applicant.
  • The research assistant job sits above the credit union job, because cleaning data in R is much closer to an analyst intern's work than balancing a teller drawer.
  • Coursework gets a section of its own with one real piece of work in it, the econometrics paper, so the course names read as evidence rather than a copy of the transcript.
  • There is no objective statement and no list of soft skills. The case competition placing and the loan referral count say more about the student in fewer words.

Summaries

Internship resume summary examples for each situation

The same resume opens differently depending on where you are starting from. One summary for each case, and what it leads with.

  • First internship, nothing in the field yet

Second-year psychology student at the University of Texas at Austin (3.5 GPA) who designed and ran a 90-participant survey for a research methods class and volunteers eight hours a month on a crisis text line. Applying for a summer internship in user research or nonprofit program support.

With nothing in the field yet, the strongest class project stands in for the job. Give its size and method, and mention it in the summary as well as in the projects section.

  • Second internship, after a first one

Third-year mechanical engineering student at Georgia Tech who spent summer 2026 as a manufacturing intern at a pump maker, where a fixture redesign cut changeover time on one line from 40 to 25 minutes. Looking for a summer 2027 design or product engineering internship.

The first internship is now the headline. Lead with its title, the kind of employer and one result, and move campus jobs below it or cut them.

  • Graduate student internship

Master of Public Health student at Emory University, in the second semester, with three years as a pharmacy technician before graduate school. Seeking a summer practicum in epidemiology or health department data work, with coursework in SAS, biostatistics and survey design.

A graduate student usually has real work behind them, so the years of prior experience go in the first sentence and the degree in progress explains why an internship makes sense now.

Skills

Skills for an internship resume

Internship postings usually split into a short list of required tools and a longer list of nice-to-haves. Put the required tools you know first, add the field-specific software the posting names, and if you learned a tool in class, show the course or project where you used it.

Hard skills

Office and analysis tools

  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Google Workspace
  • Tableau

Data and programming

  • Python
  • R
  • SQL

Research and writing

  • Literature review
  • Survey design
  • Report writing
  • Data cleaning

Field-specific software

  • SolidWorks
  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Salesforce

Soft skills

  • Coachability
  • Initiative
  • Attention to detail
  • Asking good questions
  • Professional communication
  • Time management

Name two or three of these in the skills section at most. They count for more when a bullet shows one at work.

Bullet points

Internship resume bullet points, before and after

Five lines as people first write them, and the same lines rewritten so the result comes last, where the eye lands. The numbers are illustrative; use your own.

  • Helped with research in a psychology lab.

Coded 140 recorded parent-child play sessions for a developmental psychology lab and reached 92% agreement with the lead coder on the reliability check.

  • Did an engineering design project.

Designed and 3D-printed a mounting bracket for a four-person design team, cutting the part's weight by 30% while it still passed the same load test.

  • Ran social media for a student club.

Ran the Instagram account for a 150-member student club with a weekly event recap and member spotlights, and followers grew from 400 to 1,100 in a year.

  • Interned at a marketing agency last summer.

Built weekly performance reports for four client ad accounts during a 10-week agency internship, and the account team now sends that report template to every new client.

  • Worked at the campus library.

Answered 40 to 60 questions a shift at the main campus library desk and rewrote the printing help page, which cut printing questions at the desk by about a third.

Beyond experience

What an internship resume shows instead of a full-time job

Nobody hiring an intern expects a career, so the page is judged on how close your school and part-time work come to the tasks in the posting. These sections carry that weight. Use the ones that match the role and leave the others off.

  • The dates you can work

Internships run on fixed start and end dates. Put yours in the summary or next to your graduation date, and say so if you can only do part of the program, rather than letting it come up at the offer stage.

  • Relevant coursework

Three to five courses that match the posting, on one line. A course with a real deliverable, such as a term paper, a financial model or a prototype, is worth a line of its own with what came of it.

  • Projects and competitions

Case competitions, hackathons, design teams and research papers. Write the team size, your part and the outcome: a placing, a working prototype or a client who used your work all count.

  • Campus jobs and research positions

Research assistant, lab technician, peer tutor, desk staff. These are paid jobs with a supervisor who can vouch for you, so they belong under experience with dates and bullets, not under activities.

  • A link to work samples

A GitHub profile for coding roles, a portfolio for design, published articles for communications. One link in the contact line is enough, and only when the work behind it is finished.

Template

Which template to use for an internship resume

ATS Pro. Internship applications usually pass through a university job board or the employer's applicant system before a recruiter reads them. ATS Pro keeps every word in one reading column for that software, and its dark header and skill tags make a short student resume look finished rather than thin. If a portal asks you to paste plain text, or you want a free PDF without a watermark, use Basic.

Internship resume questions

What should I put on my resume for an internship?

Your school, major, expected graduation date and GPA; the dates you can work; any jobs, research positions or earlier internships, with bullets that end in a result; a projects section with your best class or team work; one line of relevant coursework; and the tools the posting names. Drop high school after your first year of college, and skip a list of personality traits.

How do I write an internship resume with no experience?

Treat your strongest class project as a job: a title, the dates, what you did and what came of it. Add campus jobs, volunteering and club roles below it with numbers where you have them, and write the summary about the work you want to learn rather than the experience you lack.

Should I put my GPA on an internship resume?

Yes, if it is 3.0 or higher or the posting asks for it. If the GPA in your major is stronger than your overall one, list the major GPA and label it, for example "Major GPA 3.6", so nobody mistakes it for the overall figure.

How long should an internship resume be?

One page. The recruiter is comparing students with a few years of college each, and a second page mostly shows that you could not decide what to cut. When you need space, drop the oldest part-time job before the project that matches the posting.

Applying to several jobs? A CV builder, a job-match checker and a personal website cost about $90 a month together on their cheapest plans. The Job Search Pack does all of it for $29, paid once, for 30 days: clean PDFs, cover letters, the full ATS check and your own CV website. That is $1.45 per application if you send 20.
